Who we are
At the Cognitive Futures Lab at Duke, we are dedicated to safeguarding cognitive liberty – the right to self-determination over our brains and mental processes.
We use an evidence-based approach to promote responsible innovation within the evolving cognitive ecosystem. Our work spans research, policy, and industry collaboration, focusing on the ethical, legal, and societal implications of factors influencing human cognition, from emerging technologies (including neurotechnologies, machine-mind interfaces, AI, and neural organoids) to fundamental legal and philosophical inquiries impacting human cognition. We strive to ensure that innovation enhances human rights and contributes to a future where technology empowers human flourishing.
